Great freeware

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

I have just installed software on a new computer running Windows XP and it reminded me of the great freeware I use. Here are some of them in no particular order.

  1. Winamp
  2. Media Player Classic (to avoid Realplayer)
  3. Google Chrome
  4. Mozilla Firefox
  5. Irfanview (I just used the thumb option to get 360 student images to a word processor file using print screen)
  6. TreasureUP PDF to Image Converter 1.1 (I convert the school’s newsletter pdf file to images and post them on the school’s web site, it requires Adobe Acrobat Writer, but the free 30 day trial version is enough)
  7. BIMP Lite v1.62 (excellent for batch resizing)
  8. FastStone Photo Resizer (maybe this is not needed since BIMP Lite is installed)
  9. Open Office 3.1
  10. Scribus
  11. Alleycode HTML Editor (text editor I use for creating and editing text files like html)
  12. Filezilla (ftp)
  13. QuickSearcher Freeware (I use it to search Foxpro’s prg files to look for text)
  14. Keynote (note software, unfortunately only one can be opened at a time)
  15. Treepad (similar to Keynote)
  16. Foxit Reader (reading pdf files)
  17. Adobe Reader (recommended to use with Scribus, maybe Foxit is enough)
  18. VLC Media Player (plays even copied CDs)
  19. EZBack-it-up (I use it to synchronise data on USB stick to hard disk and between two portable hard disks)
  20. µTorrent (I got tired of Miro that took forever to load and slowed the machine down. Excellent interface.)
  21. BabasChess (For playing chess online)
  22. Skype
  23. Format Factory (Lets me extract part of a video)
  24. MagicDisc (to use (mount) iso files without burning them to a CD first.

Speeding things up

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

If your computer is slow try these free programs to speed things up.

All of the programs, except the last one, are from this page:

Get rid of the crap:

21. CCleaner: a fantastic hard drive cleaner that can rid your system of temp files, internet traces such as your surfing history, cookies, logfiles, cached files and other unused files from your computer. Installer comes with Yahoo toolbar included, so be careful to uncheck that during the installation process so it doesn’t install on your computer. Also includes a registry cleaner.

Make it faster for the machine to load and save files:

17. JKDefrag GUI: this is the graphical user interface for JKDefrag a hard disk defragmentation program. There are 3 reasons why you should use this program (a) JKDefrag has recently been tested and found to be the best amongst x different defragmentation programs, free and paid, (b) it provides the option to install itself as a screen saver, which will kick-off the defragmentation process whenever your computer is idle and goes into screensaver mode, and (c) it is fast and delivers excellent performance (see this blog for an interesting comparison of free and commercial defraggers, where JKDefrag was deemed the best freeware defrag program)..

Sweep your ram:

45. SweepRAM: a tiny, no-install RAM optimizer that frees system RAM by allowing applications all the RAM that they need, but no more (i.e. does not deprive programs from RAM). Use it to free RAM whenever your available memory plummets and/or your system becomes sluggish.

Where did all the hard drive space go? Part I:

18. Folder Size: this free Windows Explorer extension provides a “Folder Size” column in Windows explorer’s ’Detail’ view that shows the size of both files and folders (Windows shows the size of files but not that of folders). My second choice for a for a free program that does this would be “Aurionix FileUsage“; the latter offers more columns but requires .NET and therefore much more resources than Folder Size does.

Where did all the hard drive space go? Part II:

SpaceSniffer is a freeWare (or, better, donationWare) and portable tool application that gives you an idea of how folders and files are structured on your disks. By using a Treemapvisualization layout, you have immediate perception of where big folders and files are situated on your devices. Treemap concept was invented by Prof. Ben Shneiderman, who kindly permitted the use of his concept into this tool.

Update May 27:

You may also like to update your drivers:

Like any software, drivers are upgraded and updated by the manufacturers, to remove bugs, add extra functionality to the hardware or to improve the performance of the device. Unless you update your drivers regularly you may face problems ranging from the relatively minor, such as having hardware that seems buggy and poorly performing, to the more major such as hardware failures, conflicts and complete system crashes.

A free program can be found at http://www.liutilities.com/products/campaigns/affiliate/offer/gen/ds/. The program scans for outdated drivers and if you pay $29.95 you can get the new drivers downloaded automatically.

Open source free programs for Windows

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

“Open Source Windows is a simple list of the best free and open source software for Windows. We aren’t trying to be a comprehensive listing of every open-source Windows application, instead we want to showcase the best, most important, and easiest to use. This page should be a handy reference and a useful tool for getting more people to start using free and open-source software.” More

I just installed Miro. “Turn your computer into an internet TV. Download Miro to watch free internet video channels and play any video file.”

Found thanks to Stumble. “If you are not stumbling you are walking straight.”

Update July 28:
The FAQ says little on how to download from torrents, but I managed anyway. Go to isoHunt or MiniNova, search for your file, download the torrent, when it is downloaded just double click the torrent and the downloading will start in Miro.

Free batch image processing

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

fettre.jpg

Just downloaded a free batch image program from FastStone that will add text ((c) 2008 Jan Nordgreen) and water marks (FastStone …) as well as shadows to images, and other stuff I could already do with other batch image programs in my batch.

By the way, I am the youngest gentleman in the picture.
