An exception
Tuesday, December 9th, 2008We will make one exception to the rule that jokes should not be explained. What on earth is the point in the above cartoon?

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008Garbage, squares, and triangles
Monday, December 8th, 2008I live in Lom Talay village. It is called a village, but is just a guarded set of houses laid out in a square grid. ‘Housing complex’ would be a better term, but not as appealing.
As I was sitting in the village’s park I observed the garbage truck visiting all the houses and the following problem was discovered.
A garbace truck enters a village at A and leaves at A. How many squares does it have to cover to visit all the houses? Another way of saying the same thing: How long unbroken line is needed to draw a 2×2 square grid when you start and end in one of the grid’s corners?
When you have the answer for 2×2, have a go at 3×3, and nxn.
Now imagine that our village has a triangle layout:
Answer the same questions as for the square grid.

Draw with only one line
Friday, December 5th, 2008Visit http://www.experiencingmaths.org/ and click ‘Connections’ on the left menu and ‘Of a single line’ at the top. Can you draw all seven shapes with one line only? I could not. I wonder why!

Thursday, December 4th, 2008Visit http://www.experiencingmaths.org/ and click ‘Optimisation’ on the left menu and ‘The shortest path’ on the top menu.
Move the blue points to find the shortest path crossing both rivers. Thanks to the computer everybody may do mathematical experiments and learn from them.
