Objection, your honour!

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

- How did it go?
- The judge sentenced me to one million seconds in jail.
- That’s nothing! Imagine if it was one thousand million seconds!

With your head only, estimate how long the sentence was and how long it might have been.

Adding up ages may lead to surprises

Monday, March 30th, 2009

- So, yesterday was your birthday?!
- It makes no sense denying it.
- And you were 56?
- I was 19 for the third time.
- That is interesting.
- Why do you say that?
- You have four sons, right?
- Four sons, no daughters.
- And they are currently 27, 25, 3, and 1 years old.
- More or less.
- What do you get when you add them?
- I try not to. To me they are unique individuals.
- OK, I respect that. What I meant was, what is the sum of their ages?
- 56. Well actually a bit more since they did not all have a birthday yesterday as I did.
- So maybe their age is 57, just like yours?!
- I see what you mean. What day was their total age equal to my age?
- What are their birthdays?
- 11.06.1981, 01.07.1983, 17.11.2005, and 20.07.2007.
- At what time of the day were they born?
- Let’s say they were born at noon, just like me.
- OK.
- I wonder, when they will be twice as old as me?
- That’s a good question.
- Will they ever be ten times as old as me?
- Who knows!

Reflections

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Today is my birthday. I was born in Bergen, Norway, in the year 1952. Now I live in Ban Chang, Thailand and the year is 2552. In other words, I am a mere 600 years today.

Three other March 29 tidbits.

On March 29, 1973, the last United States troops left South Vietnam, ending America’s direct military involvement in the Vietnam War.

Día del joven combatiente (Spanish for Day of the young combatant) is a non official remembrance day, celebrated each 29 March in Chile by the MIR and by people from Chilean slums. It commemorates the death of the brothers Rafael and Eduardo Vergara Toledo, which occurred the 29 March of 1985 during the military regime era in Chile.

Youth Day in the Republic of China is on March 29.

Not just any Fiat

Friday, March 27th, 2009

- Nice car you are driving. What is it?
- It is a Fiat 124 Coupe 1975.
- What is special about 124?
- Don’t you know? Plenty of things!
- Mention one.
- 124 can be split in two ways: (1, 24) and (12, 4).
- So can every number with three digits!
- True, but 1 is a factor of 24 and 4 is a factor of 12.
- OK. But many numbers are like that!
- Can you find the biggest? It can have as many digits as you please, but they all have to be distinct.
- What about 123456798?
- Let’s test it. 1 is a factor of 23456798.
- And 12 is a factor of 3456798.
- You are off to a good start.

Industrious pawns

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Once upon a time some pawns entered a gigantic chess board. I think there were more than one million rows and the same number of columns. Not more than one pawn occupied each square and many squares had no pawn at all. They tried to position themselves in such a way that the number of pawns in each row and column was distinct.

How did they succeed?
