Mathematical excitement

Monday, May 25th, 2009

- Did you try WolframAlpha – the computational knowledge engine?
- Yeah man! Cool stuff!
- You sound excited?
- I asked it to find 145! and it did so immediately. Google just gave me an approximation.
- Why are you interested in the factorial of 145?
- Didn’t you hear?
- What?
- It is one of a select group of numbers that is equal to the factorials of its digits.
- Please translate.
- 145 = 1! + 4! + 5! = 1 + 24 + 120.
- Neat man! That is totally awesome! What are the other numbers in the group?
- Don’t remember, but here is another thing you maybe didn’t know.
- What?

- How did you find out?
- WolframAlpha.

Playful thinking

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Langton’s ant travels around in a grid of black or white squares. If she exits a square, its colour inverts. If she enters a black square, she turns right, and if she enters a white square, she turns left.

The evident long-term behaviour is remarkable, and unexplained.

Play with the ant here.

Inflating P O Box

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

To remember a P O Box number is not easy. For one, I don’t have a clue what mine is. The only thing I know is that if I write it backwards it gets nine times as big.

Not four gives problems with seven

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Two identical dice have by mistake not a side with four dots. Instead it has one of the other sides repeated. If one throws the two dice the chances to get a total of seven is 1/3 less than if one were to throw two normal dice.

Which side is repeated?

Never on a Sunday

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

- Here is a silly problem if ever there was one.
- I am all ears.
- Sometimes three successive months has four Sundays in them.
- How exciting! I feel like singing and dancing.
- Prove that one of these months has to be February.
- I am tired of dancing.
